Peanut Butter Conspiracy

A Los Angeles-based psychedelic rock band, the Peanut Butter Conspiracy formed in 1966 as a spin-off of a folk rock group called the Ashes. The band signed with Columbia Records in 1966 and released a single, “It’s a Happening Thing,” which reached No. 93 on the U.S. charts. They soon released their debut album, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy Is Spreading, followed by The Great Conspiracy. The group featured Alan Brackett (bass/vocals), Lance Baker Fent (guitar), Jim Voight (drums), John Merrill (guitar/vocals), and Barbara “Sandi” Robison (vocals).

The Doors performed with the Peanut Butter Conspiracy several times, including a series of shows at Ciro’s on April 21–23, 1967, that also included other long-forgotten Los Angeles bands, UFO and Kaleidoscope. The group also recorded music for such films as Jud; Cherry Harry, and Raquel; Hell Ride; and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls before breaking up around 1970.
